Working With Beneficiaries with Mental Health Challenges

The statistics are surprising and demonstrate why estate planners should give more attention to both planning and administering trusts that do or may have beneficiaries facing mental health challenges. 1 in 5 adults will experience mental illness in their lifetime. 1 in 25 adults are diagnosed with serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. 1/2 of all chronic mental illness begins by age 14, and 3/4ths by age 24. With these statistics many trusts and most practitioners will have to deal with the issues posed by beneficiaries facing mental health challenges. What are some of the proactive ways to discover and work with people who have mental health issues? What are some of the productive ways to work with beneficiaries who have mental health issues when you didn’t know in advance (e.g., the trust and plan have not addressed these situations)?
