Neurodiversity & Brain Health: What You Need to Know to Help Clients and Work with Colleagues

March 4, 2024

How many clients do you have living with chronic illness or neurological conditions? How many colleagues or staff do you work with who are living with chronic illness or neurological conditions, or whose lives are affected by their caregiving for a family member who is? The reality is that a tremendous number of people are living with these conditions, far more than most realize. More than 150 million Americans are living with a chronic condition. 15-20% of the population is considered to be neurodivergent. Neurodiversity is a term coined by Judy Singer in 1998, an autistic sociologist. It was originally referred to autism, but now includes all neurological differences people may experience. Recognizing the unique strengths and challenges of neurodiverse individuals can help you connect with clients and work better with colleagues.  Like differences in physical appearance, there are natural variations in our brains. “Neurotypical” is what is considered “normal” within the dominant societal standards. Normal or neurotypical is not a prerequisite to success. A neurodivergent person has one or more ways in which their brain functions outside the so-called ‘norm’. Examples include Dyslexia, OCD, Dysgraphia, ADHD, DCD/Dyspraxia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), etc. In many cases, simply building your awareness of conditions clients and colleagues face will enable you to better assist them. In many cases, modest changes in how you respond may make clients feel comfortable sharing information so that you can better help them. Small adjustments in how you interact with neurodiverse colleagues may help them feel more comfortable which can lead to boosts in productivity adding to your firm’s success. This practical webinar will discuss many different conditions and how you can identify them and respond more compassionately and productively.   Speakers: Jina Etienne, CPA, CDE, Etienne Consulting and Martin Shenkman, Esq.   *This may constitute attorney advertising. * No CPE, CLE, etc. is offered but a certificate of attendance will be provided.
